I stumbled across a used copy of Winning Eleven 8 for a cheap price and as I'm always up for a good bargain I snapped it up. I used to have a gamepad for my PC, but it doesn't work with XP so I'm stuck using the keyboard. I thought this would be impossible but I found it surprisingly easy to get into the game and play it with the keyboard even though I couldn't do all of the fancy key combos.
It's been many years since I played FIFA, and I always hated it. It felt rigid like I was never in control. It didn't seem realistic and I never enjoyed playing it.
My first thought in WE8 was 'oh god it's a crappy console port and why can't I use the mouse!!??'. So that really is my only negative so far. I only played for 2 hours last night and easily beat Saudi Arabia on the easy level. Ok, so that's nothing to be proud of but it does mean that I can actually play with the keyboard.
The things I love so far? Well the little details are incredible and the fact that the ball keeps rolling when stop. That last detail makes all the difference in the world. No more glue!
I managed to score some wonderful goals, some planned well some not so. Typically with football games in the past I would use the old tactic of rush up the field and score. WE8 at least lets me play some realistic football. I'm sure the same unrealistic tactic would work on the easy level but above that I'm sure I will need more skill.
The deft touches the players can do are wonderful. Michael Owen took on the keeper, tapped it out his reach, ran round and scored. Beautifully done, realistic but I swear I didn't tell him to do it! Another one (which may also have been scripted) was a low shot was deflected off the keeper's hand to one of my player's who tapped it into the back of the net. Again, realistic and very satisfying.
Having not played FIFA for many years (at least 6?), I have to ask, why do they keep making sequels when WE8 is this good?
So after all that writing, what are your favourite things about WE8? Any tips or scoring techniques?
Thanks
